What Israel needed in a king

Acts Bible Background

To read the Bible in a year, read Acts 13.1–23 on July 5, In the year of our Lord 2018

By Don Ruhl

Israel told God that they wanted a king. So He gave them one, but that king served God at first and later only served himself. God never did that to them. He always maintained righteousness. However, He gave them another king. Paul said to his fellow Jews:

“And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will’” (Acts 13.22).

In David they got a man who had a heart like God’s. And Israel loved David. They loved him because he had a heart like God’s. They could have had God’s heart all along in the first place!

Questions:

  • Could it be said of you that you are a man or woman after God’s own heart?
  • Do you know someone who has a heart after God’s own heart?
