There is only so much that we can do

09.17.2018 – Old Testament: Ecc 1.13–15

To read the Bible in a year, read Ecclesiastes 1–3 on September 17, In the year of our Lord 2018

By Don Ruhl

How many people live on the earth and what are they all doing? What are they all trying to do? Think on the words of King Solomon:

And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven; this burdensome task God has given to the sons of man, by which they may be exercised. I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

What is crooked cannot be made straight,
And what is lacking cannot be numbered.
(Ecclesiastes 1.13–15)

Why then do we work? What are we trying to do? We want to make the crooked straight, but after all our efforts the results do not seem to equal the effort we expended.

How much lacks in this world? For example, how many people lack a knowledge of the word of God? What can we do about it? It feels fruitless to do anything, yet, we know that the few whom we do affect will make all our efforts worth it.

Questions:

  • What is your life about?
  • How much have you changed in this world?
