12.07.2018 – Old Testament: Dan 9.24
To read the Bible in a year, read Daniel 9–10 on December 7, In the year of our Lord Christ 2018
By Don Ruhl
Daniel had read the Book of Jeremiah and could see that the Babylonian Captivity would last only 70 years, and that 70 years was up. Therefore, Daniel prayed to God, confessing the sin of Israel and asking God to restore them to their land.
In response God sent Gabriel to the prophet and gave what we call Daniel’s 70 weeks, beginning with these words:
“Seventy weeks are determined
For your people and for your holy city,
To finish the transgression,
To make an end of sins,
To make reconciliation for iniquity,
To bring in everlasting righteousness,
To seal up vision and prophecy,
And to anoint the Most Holy.”
God used weeks or units of seven to represent years. Thus a time span of 490 years. Toward the end of that time, God would work a wonderful thing and wipe out sin, which happened through the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, Gabriel revealed to Daniel a timeline for when the Christ would arrive in the world and when He would do His marvelous work.
- The Lord provided a timeline for His first arrival. Has He done the same for His second arrival?
- What would He seal up at the same time as making an end of sins?
