Fearing when you do not need to fear

Genesis Bible Background

01.13.2019 – Old Testament: Gen 31.31

To read the Bible in a year, read Genesis 31–32 on January 13, In the year of our Lord Christ 2019

By Don Ruhl

Laban had cheated his son-in-law Jacob in many ways and Jacob finally decided to get away along with his whole family and all his flocks. However, he did not tell Laban and later Laban caught up to Jacob and confronted him on his sneaking away. Jacob explained:

Then Jacob answered and said to Laban, “Because I was afraid, for I said, ‘Perhaps you would take your daughters from me by force’” (Genesis 31.31).

In many ways, we can understand Jacob’s fear, but would Laban have taken his daughters away from Jacob by force? We do know that God appeared to Laban in a dream and warned him not to harm Jacob. We also know that God told Jacob to return to the Land of Canaan. Therefore, the Lord would see to it that Jacob and his family arrived in Canaan.

  • How often do your fears come to pass?
  • How have you managed to survive to this present day?
