Moses did not realize just how sinful the children of Israel had become while he was up in the mountain with God, but when Moses arrived in the camp, he saw them worshiping a golden calf, and watch what he did:

So it was, as soon as he came near the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing. So Moses’ anger became hot, and he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. Then he took the calf which they had made, burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder; and he scattered it on the water and made the children of Israel drink it (Exodus 32.19–20).

Israel had no idea what they had done, and that awful sin would plague them for a thousand years until Babylonian captivity removed it from them permanently. Moses was right to be angry, for this is a vile sin and highly offensive to the one true and living God.
