02.15.2019 – New Testament: Matt 28.1–3
To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 28 on February 15, In the year of our Lord Christ 2019
By Don Ruhl
Two women went to see the tomb of Jesus, but when they arrived they saw something that they never anticipated:
Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it (Matthew 28.1–2).
Was the angel playing? Look at him. He descended from heaven. No problem for an angel. He rolled back the stone from the door. He did not work to move that stone, for what is a stone to an angel? Then the powerful being from heaven sat on the stone. That made me laugh. He just moved the stone out of the way and then sat on it. He just waited for the women.
The women wanted to see the tomb, hoping to see Jesus inside, but they saw more than a tomb and they did not see Jesus, for He was gone! He was no longer dead. Why should He be in a tomb? Instead look again at what the women saw of the angel:
His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow (Matthew 28.3).
They expected to see a dead man, but they saw someone with clothing like lightning, bright as snow!
