What was the purpose of miracles?

Matthew Bible Background

03.17.2019 – New Testament: Mark 16.20

To read the Bible in a year, read Mark 16 on March 17, In the year of our Lord Christ 2019

By Don Ruhl

Why did Jesus work miracles? Why did He give His apostles authority to work miracles? After giving them the Great Commission, He ascended into heaven, and then Mark wrote:

And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen (Mark 16.20).

The apostles began going into the world to preach the good news of Jesus Christ. The Lord worked with them as they did so by confirming what they said with what they did; they performed miraculous works. The purpose of miracles was to confirm that the miracle worker had power from heaven and spoke the message of heaven.

  • What do you think of what people call miracles today?
  • Why do you believe the word that the apostles preached and wrote down in the New Testament?
