03.24.2019 – New Testament: Luke 4.23
To read the Bible in a year, read Luke 4.1–32 on March 24, In the year of our Lord Christ 2019
By Don Ruhl
Jesus spoke amazing things in His hometown of Nazareth, yet, they would reject Him. They heard Him speak words that seemed beyond his heritage, for his father was Joseph a carpenter. They also heard about His miracles and that would make them think of another criticism:
He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in Your country.’”
– Luke 4.23
He could heal anyone of any problem they had with their bodies, but later the Jews would use the Romans to crucify Jesus. So the people would then challenge Jesus to use His powers to deliver Himself from the cross. Since He was not doing it, that gave them reason to believe their suspicions about Him being a fraud were correct.
However, He did something much greater than delivering Himself from the cross, He raised Himself from the dead, showing that He was, and still is, much more than the son of Joseph, but ultimately the Son of God.
- What do you believe about the identity of Jesus of Nazareth?
- Do you think you would have accepted Him if you had watched Him grow up in Nazareth?
