John Bible Background

New Testament: John 18.38

To read the Bible in a year, read John 18.24–40 on June 10, In the year of our Lord Christ 2019

By Don Ruhl

Pilate had no idea who stood before him. Then again, neither did the Jewish leaders who had handed Jesus over to the Roman governor, but they should have known. The Jewish leaders wanted Him dead, but as Pilate cross-examined Jesus, he could not find anything in Jesus worthy of death.

When Jesus declared that He had come into the world to bear witness to the truth, and that everyone who is of the truth, hears the voice of Jesus, John recorded what happened next:

Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all.

– John 18.38

Pilate did not know what truth was, but he knew that Jesus was innocent, and for that situation, that was the truth. Pilate, therefore, should have released Jesus, but failed to do so.
