When Jesus asks questions

Luke Bible Background

New Testament: Luke 17.17–18

To read the Bible in a year, read Luke 17.1–19 on April 19, In the year of our Lord 2020

By Don Ruhl

Do you have questions for the Lord? It would not surprise me if every single one of us had questions for Him, but consider that He also has questions for us. After He had healed ten lepers, only one returned to thank God and to glorify Him.

So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?”

– Luke 17.17–18

We can answer the first question easily. Yes, Jesus cleansed 10 lepers. However, how do we answer the second question? Then consider the irony of His third question, because the nine were Israelites, but the one who returned was a Samaritan. Should not the Israelites have been the first to recognize the blessing and power of God and led the Samaritan to glorify God? Unfortunately, it does not always work that way, including among Christians.

  • What are your questions that you would like to ask the Lord?
  • Have you witnessed an unbeliever do something that you as a Christian should have done?
