Even back in the days of Jeremiah, some taught in Israel that the children bear the guilt of the father’s sins, which is what some teach today. Therefore, the Lord had Jeremiah speak these words to his people:

“In those days they shall say no more: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’ But every one shall die for his own iniquity; every man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.”

– Jeremiah 31.29–30

Yet, in spite of what the Lord taught here, the teaching that we inherit the guilt of Adam’s sin persists!

Questions:

• Do we suffer because of the sins of others?
• If so, what is the difference between that and what the Lord taught in our passage today?
