Will people kill for beauty?

Old Testament: Gen 26.7–8

To read the Bible in a year, read Genesis 25–26 on January 10, In the year of our Lord Christ 2021

By Don Ruhl

Isaac had a beautiful wife and he feared what the men of Gerar in Philistia might do when they saw her. So this happened:

And the men of the place asked about his wife. And he said, “She is my sister”; for he was afraid to say, “She is my wife,” because he thought, “lest the men of the place kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful to behold.” Now it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked through a window, and saw, and there was Isaac, showing endearment to Rebekah his wife.

– Genesis 26.7–8

The Lord had made a promise to Abraham, and then to Isaac, that their descendants would be without number. Therefore, Isaac would not have died, and truly as the rest of the context shows, the king of the Philistines rebuked Isaac when the king found out that Isaac and Rebekah were married.

  • What would you have done if you were in the place of Isaac?
  • What does beauty mean to you?
