Joseph helped Egypt more than later Egyptians realized

Old Testament: Gen 47.13–14

To read the Bible in a year, read Genesis 46–48 on January 20, In the year of our Lord Christ 2021

By Don Ruhl

Some generations after Joseph, there arose a Pharaoh who did not know Joseph, and therefore, did not know what he had done for Egypt, and for Pharaoh. If that Pharaoh who arose later during the generation of Moses had known how much the children of Israel had blessed the Egyptians, he never would have enslaved Israel.

One of the big things that Joseph did was to acquire all the money of Egypt for Pharaoh:

Now there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house.

– Genesis 47.13–14

In this manner Pharaoh became rich and powerful. Then a later Pharaoh used that power to suppress the very people who had helped his nation. There are many things to learn from history, and we cannot know everything, but there are some things that we just need to know. History is boring to some people, but we would all do better by knowing as much as we can.
