The wife of the high priest

Old Testament: Lev 21.13–15

To read the Bible in a year, read Leviticus 20–21 on February 15, In the year of our Lord Christ 2021

By Don Ruhl

The sons of Aaron, who served as the high priests for the nation of Israel, had many qualifications. Even their marriages had certain limitations:

“And he shall take a wife in her virginity. A widow or a divorced woman or a defiled woman or a harlot—these he shall not marry; but he shall take a virgin of his own people as wife. Nor shall he profane his posterity among his people, for I the LORD sanctify him.”

– Leviticus 21.13–15

Since the high priests typified the Christ, and their wives typified the church, the bride of Christ, they had to take wives who were virgins. Thus, would be fulfilled what Paul said, “For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ” (2 Corinthians 11.2).
