Sometimes when a consequence is not named or described, it makes us wonder just how horrible it might be, as when Peter said: 

For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.

– 2 Peter 2.21 

However, Peter did not explain why it would have been better not to have known the way of righteousness. He implies that the punishment for falling away is worse than being in a lost state in the first place.
