Do not pervert our Lord’s longsuffering nature

New Testament: 2Pe 3.15–16

To read the Bible in a year, read Second Peter 3 on December 1, In the year of our Lord 2021

By Don Ruhl

Peter prophesied of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, but the apostle also revealed that some people use the Lord’s apparent delay as a reason to sin. Peter also said that some people do the same thing to Paul’s writings,

…consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.

– 2 Peter 3.15–16

Both Peter and Paul wrote of the Second Coming of Christ and both of them spoke of the Lord’s compassion toward sinners, but if anyone twists the teachings of Scripture, they do so to their own destruction. The Lord knows what we are doing and will deal with us accordingly.

Questions:

  • Are you preparing yourself with godly living for the Lord’s return?
  • Do you try to change the teaching of Scripture to suit your lifestyle or do you change your lifestyle to suit the teaching of Scripture?
