What if the Lord said to you, “What do you wish?”

New Testament: Matt 20.20–21

To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 20.17–34 on January 30, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

Watch what happened when the mother of James and John approached Jesus, and what he asked her:

Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from Him. And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.”

– Matthew 20.20–21

The mother of James and John approached Jesus properly. Then he spoke a wide open question, “What do you wish?”

How would you answer that question from the Lord? She went way beyond anything I would have imagined, and it was something that Jesus did not have the authority to grant.

Nevertheless, the Lord is willing to do just about anything for us, if we understand his will, and what types of requests he grants and what types he does not.

Think for the rest of the day on what you would say to him, if he asked you that question.

Questions:

  • So what would you say to him if you asked you what you wanted?
  • Does he not already tell us that he will grant what we want, if we ask according to his will?
