The penalty for perverting God’s religion

New Testament: Matt 23.34–36

To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 23.23–39 on February 5, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

As Jesus concluded his denunciation of the scribes and Pharisees, He revealed the severe penalty coming upon them for perverting the religion of God:

“Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.”

– Matthew 23.34–36

Their long history of persecuting the prophets of God, would culminate with that generation when the Lord would punish them for their error by destroying Jerusalem in AD 70.

God does not take lightly the persecution of the messengers whom he sends to warn people of how they have violated his will.

Questions:

  • Who killed Abel and why?
  • Where did they kill Zechariah?
