Parables

New Testament: Mark 4.2

To read the Bible in a year, read Mark 4.1–20 on February 21, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

People crowded Jesus so much at the lake that he had to get into a boat and teach from it. Once situated, he did what he did so often:

Then He taught them many things by parables, and said to them in His teaching…”

– Mark 4.2

Jesus used parables to teach. The word “parable” comes from two Greek words that mean to throw along side. Jesus threw a story along side the truth that he wanted to teach. The story paralleled the truth on certain points. He did not reveal the particular truth, but got the people to see the story and then expected them to make the connection to the truth.

Sometimes you have to let people think for themselves instead of telling them everything. Give enough to get them started and then let them take it from there.

Questions:

  • What do you like most about the teaching methods of Jesus?
  • If Jesus were present with you right now, what would you ask him?
