We think of Israel as slaves coming out of Egypt, but the Lord saw Israel in a different way:
These are the journeys of the children of Israel, who went out of the land of Egypt by their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Other translations have divisions, hosts, or companies, but the point is, the Lord did not see Israel as mere slaves, but as a force much more powerful.
