Sometimes the simple evades us

New Testament: Mark 9.31–32

To read the Bible in a year, read Mark 9.30–50 on March 3, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

Jesus passed through Galilee and did not want anyone to know about it:

For He taught His disciples and said to them, “The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after He is killed, He will rise the third day.” But they did not understand this saying, and were afraid to ask Him.

– Mark 9.31–32

The disciples had gotten used to figuring out the mysterious and the difficult. Then when something simple jumped up before them, they missed it and did not want to show their ignorance, or did not want to ask Jesus because they were afraid to find out the meaning.

Do not complicate things more than they need to be. Keep it simple, if possible.

How would you have reacted if your best friend revealed to you that someone would betray him to people who would kill him? Then what would you think of the notion that he would rise from the dead three days later?

Think on those questions, then you can better understand the lack of understanding and fear in the hearts of the disciples.

Questions:

  • Do you understand more than you do not understand in the Bible?
  • Has your understanding of the Scriptures grown over the years?
