The Israelite honeymoon

Old Testament: Deu 24.5

To read the Bible in a year, read Deuteronomy 23–25 on March 14, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

In America, it is typical for a newly wed couple to take a few days, or even a week or two to be alone and enjoy their new relationship. However, notice what the Lord wanted the children of Israel to do:

“When a man has taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war or be charged with any business; he shall be free at home one year, and bring happiness to his wife whom he has taken.”

– Deuteronomy 24.5

A newly wed man was not to fight in war nor do any kind of business for one year that he might be home with his new bride and create a happy life for her! This shows what the Creator of marriage thinks of marriage, and it shows what he thinks of what should happen in a marriage, and it shows that marriage has priority over everything else.

Questions:

  • Do you value marriage as God does?
  • How much effort do you put into bringing happiness to your wife/husband?
