Do not make things that are an abomination to the Lord

Old Testament: Deu 27.15

To read the Bible in a year, read Deuteronomy 26–27 on March 15, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

When Israel entered the Land of Canaan, the Lord wanted them to divide up into two groups, and each group was to stand on a hillside. Between the hills, Joshua would stand and read some of the curses in God’s law, including a curse against idolatry:

“‘Cursed is the one who makes a carved or molded image, an abomination to the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ And all the people shall answer and say, ‘Amen!’”

– Deuteronomy 27.15

The whole congregation needed to know and to agree that idolatry is an abomination to the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Unfortunately, Israel forgot that to which they agreed and idolatry plagued them until the Babylonian captivity.

Questions:

  • Is idolatry a temptation to you?
  • Do you know how to persuade someone that idolatry is futile?
