The Old Testament Was Spiritual

Old Testament: Deu 30.6

To read the Bible in a year, read Deuteronomy 29–30 on March 17, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

The average person, both believer and unbeliever, has a negative view of the Old Testament, unfortunately. One charge made against it, is that it was not spiritual, but only outward. That is a false charge that comes from people who have not read the Old Testament carefully, and for that matter have not read the New Testament carefully. First, consider what Moses told Israel:

“And the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.”

– Deuteronomy 30.6

If that passage had come from the New Testament, the Old Testament critics would have said that shows the spirituality of the New Testament. However, look again at the reference, Deuteronomy 30.6, and then find it in your Bible and read it, and change your opinion.

Now listen to the New Testament, which will affirm the inward nature of what we read in the Hebrew Bible:

Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

– Romans 7.12

For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.

– Romans 7.14

Having read the Scriptures for yourself, what do you think now? Do you need to make some changes in your thinking about the Old Testament?

Questions:

  • What did God say He would circumcise in that passage from Deuteronomy?
  • What four descriptions did Paul make of the law in Romans 7?
