Old Testament: Jdg 20.24–25
To read the Bible in a year, read Judges 20–21 on April 7, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022
By Don Ruhl
The tribe of Benjamin committed a great sin and the rest of the tribes gathered together against Benjamin because they refused to repent. On the first day of battle, Israel lost 22,000 soldiers. However, undeterred, Israel again went against Benjamin:
So the children of Israel approached the children of Benjamin on the second day. And Benjamin went out against them from Gibeah on the second day, and cut down to the ground eighteen thousand more of the children of Israel; all these drew the sword.
– Judges 20.24–25
On the second day, they suffered the loss of 18,000 men, making a total of 40,000! Yet, there was sin in the midst of Benjamin and the tribe had no intention of repenting. The rest of the tribes loved their brother enough that they would suffer whatever was necessary to save a tribe in Israel.
Questions:
- What famous king of Israel came from Gibeah?
- How many men did Israel lose the next day in fighting Benjamin?
