The Lord wanted the Amalekites removed from the earth and commanded King Saul to do the job, but he wanted to modify the Lord’s command by saving the king of Amalek and by saving the best of the animals. 

Therefore, the Lord abandoned King Saul and as he was about to meet his end, he sought the Lord’s wisdom, but the Lord would not answer him. Finally, he went to a necromancer to see if she could call up Samuel who had already died. 

The woman did it and Samuel appeared, asking Saul why he had disturbed him. After Saul explained that the Lord had forsaken him, Samuel said in part: 

“And the LORD has done for Himself as He spoke by me. For the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David. Because you did not obey the voice of the LORD nor execute His fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore the LORD has done this thing to you this day. Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines. And tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The LORD will also deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.”

Saul had brought his own destruction upon himself, but he could not see it. Nevertheless, he would suffer for it as Samuel pictured. 

Things never work out when we think we know better than the Lord.
