Peter Sat Among Them

New Testament: Luke 22.54–55

To read the Bible in a year, read Luke 22.54–71 on May 1, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

The leaders of the Jews arrested Jesus, but look who tagged along:

Having arrested [Jesus], they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. But Peter followed at a distance. Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.

– Luke 22.54–55

Look at the progression. Peter followed at a distance, then he sat among them. He slowly joined those who had arrested his Teacher. Eventually Peter denied knowing the Lord. It happened fast, yet, it progressed slowly. It all happened one evening, so it was fast, but the denial did not happen as soon as Jesus was arrested.

Things happen fast, but they happen slow enough that we do not realize we have been drawn away by our own lusts. Then it happens: We sin. Rather than sitting among the people who arrested Jesus, Peter should have stood with him. However, that is easy for me to say as I sit in my comfortable room without anyone threatening me. What shall happen when I go out into the community today?

Questions:

  • Have you tried to hide that you follow Jesus?
  • It was cold. Does cold weather diminish fear or increase it?
