New Testament: John 7.52–53
To read the Bible in a year, read John 7.32–53 on May 20, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022
By Don Ruhl
As the Jewish Council considered putting Jesus to death, they cursed the crowds for following Jesus. Then Nicodemus spoke up, asking if their law judged a man before hearing from him. To which they replied:
“Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.” And everyone went to his own house.
– John 7.52–53
That was interesting. Apparently they forgot about Jonah. Second Kings 14.25 says that Jonah was from Gath-Hepher, which is 15 miles from the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Also, Isaiah 9.1 has one of the great prophecies of where the Messiah would be from, Galilee.
However, when someone makes a forceful statement, as the Council members did to Nicodemus, it can make us think that they know of what they speak, and so we believe them.
They invited him to search and look, and they were right to do so, but would they have accepted what he found? Let us also search and look, and the word of God shall amaze us continually.
Questions:
- What do you do when someone gives you a forceful answer?
- Do you know how to search and look in the Scriptures?
