Notice the men who followed David while he was a fugitive

Old Testament: 1Ch 12.1–7

To read the Bible in a year, read First Chronicles 11–13 on May 24, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

King Saul tried to kill David repeatedly and so he fled from the presence of the king, You probably also know that many followed David. However, notice who some of them were:

Now these were the men who came to David at Ziklag while he was still a fugitive from Saul the son of Kish; and they were among the mighty men, helpers in the war, armed with bows, using both the right hand and the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows with the bow. They were of Benjamin, Saul’s brethren…

– 1 Chronicles 12.1–7

First, since I am left-handed, I always notice when someone else is left-handed, and I especially notice if the Bible points it out. These men could use both, they were switch-hitters, I mean switch-hurlers!

Anyway, who were they? They were of the tribe of Benjamin, Saul’s brethren, for he was a Benjamite. Now that was a sad day in Israel’s history, that he had become so corrupt, being full of himself, that even men from his own tribe could see his evil and they refused to side with him, but sided with and helped the man whom Saul sought to kill.

Friends, please keep yourself open to correction, instruction, and rebuking, lest you become like Saul and live a life of shame.

Questions:

  • How are you at receiving correction?
  • Do you know how to correct others without trying to destroy them?
