When you receive the word of Christ, something happens to you. You may not always detect it, but others can see it. Those who have received the word of Christ will rejoice in what they see in you, but the world will not: 

“I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.”

– John 17.14 

The world hates the word of Christ and if you receive his word, the world will hate you also, because the word of Christ recreates you so that you are no longer of the world, but of the Spirit. The world and the Spirit stand opposed to one another. While it hurts when the people we knew in the world hate us, we should not be surprised that it happens.
