A garden by the place of execution

New Testament: John 19.41–42

To read the Bible in a year, read John 19.23–42 on June 12, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

Just how ugly was a crucifixion scene? We can try to imagine, but it surely was a place of horrific death, where the Romans tortured a man until he died. Yet, what this passage shows struck me as odd:

Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

– John 19.41–42

The way John wrote that sounds as though the garden was in the same place as the crucifixion! Did the Romans do this on purpose? Or did the Jews try to dress up the place? Was it mere coincidence? I do not know that we can know, nevertheless, Jesus died in a terrible place, but his body was placed in a beautiful place.

Questions:

  • Do you have burial plots or niches already purchased?
  • Into whose tomb was Jesus placed?
