Offering freely for the house of God

Old Testament: Ezra 2.68–69

To read the Bible in a year, read Ezra 1–2 on June 12, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

The Jews realized how they had sinned, and that the Lord God of Israel was just in sending the Babylonians against them, taking many of them to Babylon as captives for 70 years.

Later, when they returned, they needed and wanted to rebuild the temple and they were moved to give generously:

Some of the heads of the fathers’ houses, when they came to the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem, offered freely for the house of God, to erect it in its place: According to their ability, they gave to the treasury for the work sixty-one thousand gold drachmas, five thousand minas of silver, and one hundred priestly garments.

– Ezra 2.68–69

The Lord never asks us to give what we do not have, but what we do have we should see as coming from him in the first place, and that should lead us to give whatever we can for the house of God, which is now the church of the living God (1 Timothy 3.15).

Questions:

  • How many gold drachmas did they give?
  • How do you give each Lord’s Day? Do you give according to a percentage or an amount that you have decided?
