How Peter would die

New Testament: John 21.18–19

To read the Bible in a year, read John 21 on June 14, In the year of our Lord 2022

By Don Ruhl

The Bible speaks more about the death of Jesus than any other person, but it does address the deaths of others and in the case of Peter, in prophecy:

“Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”

– John 21.18–19

History tells us that Peter died by crucifixion, and upside down, by his request. That could fit the prophecy of Jesus. Note though that Peter would glorify God in his death, but before doing that, Peter had to follow Jesus.

Questions:

  • Have you thought about glorifying God in your manner of death?
  • Are you following Jesus?
