A man had lied about how much he and his wife had sold their property for, trying to make it look as though they had given 100% of the proceeds to the church. They had held some back, which was fine, but they should not have said that they gave it all. He died when he lied to the church about what they had done. 

Later, his wife approached the church and Peter asked her whether they had sold the property for the amount that the husband had reported and she agreed: 

Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. And Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?” She said, “Yes, for so much.”

– Acts 5.7–8 

She suffered the same fate as her husband; she died on the spot. Let us not try to fool anyone, especially God, that we are better than we truly are, for it will only lead to our demise and humiliation.
