Do you need a law for people to respect you?

Old Testament: Esth 1.21–22

To read the Bible in a year, read Esther 1–3 on June 21, In the year of our Lord 2022

By Don Ruhl

Queen Vashti did not do what her husband wanted, so he asked his advisers what to do with her. They suggested that since she set a bad example for the rest of the wives in the Persian Empire, that the king should make a new law that all wives honor their husbands:

And the reply pleased the king and the princes, and the king did according to the word of Memucan. Then he sent letters to all the king’s provinces, to each province in its own script, and to every people in their own language, that each man should be master in his own house, and speak in the language of his own people.

– Esther 1.21–22

If each husband loved and honored his wife, would she not love and honor him in return? If he did not love and honor his wife, would a national law help the situation? Yes, we all must be taught to love one another and to respect one another, but something seemed missing in the Persian Empire.

Questions:

  • Do you love and honor your spouse?
  • What can you do to show it more?
