Heaven works behind the scenes

New Testament: Acts 8.26–29

To read the Bible in a year, read Acts 8.26–40 on June 28, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

Luke revealed in the story of the conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch, that heaven worked to bring together the preacher and the prospect:

Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This is desert.”

– Acts 8.26

Philip immediately obeyed the angel, because he spoke for God. Then Luke showed the treasurer from Ethiopia, who was returning from Jerusalem, and was reading the Book of Isaiah as he traveled along:

So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet.

– Acts 8.27–28

Luke stated what happened next, showing us that heaven worked behind the scenes to bring these two men together:

Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and overtake this chariot.”

– Acts 8.29

Again, Philip did as he was told. He ended up preaching to the Ethiopian treasurer and baptizing him. Generally, in the Scriptures we do not see angels and the Spirit directing things, but Luke gave us a peek behind the scenes that we might see heaven working to bring together those who have the Message of Christ and those who want it.

Pray to God that he might use you to teach someone who wants to learn.

Questions:

  • Can you find on a map, the road that went from Jerusalem to Gaza?
  • What was the name of the queen?
