When you have a relentless critic, the temptation is to become like him, to fight him in the way that he is fighting you, and soon you have forgotten to take the righteous path. David knew how this happens, so he prayed: 

Lead me, O LORD, in Your righteousness because of my enemies;
Make Your way straight before my face.

– Psalm 5.8 

We cannot let our eyes fall solely on our enemy, but we always have to have our eyes on the Lord. That is why David prayed as he did.
