When your heart has not been pure

Old Testament: Psa 51.10

To read the Bible in a year, read Psalms 50–52 on July 27, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

David had looked at a woman and lusted after her. He then had her brought to him, and they committed adultery. Later, he had her husband killed, and he took the woman as his wife.

The Lord then showed David that what he had done had not been hidden from the Lord. He also showed David the consequences that he would suffer for his sins.

David had a broken heart and wrote Psalm 51, showing the Lord and us the grief of his soul. One request he made in the Psalm was this:

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.

– Psalm 51.10

David knew that his heart had been unclean and that to have a clean heart, he needed the help of God. Therefore, he pleaded with God to create within him a clean heart.

David also wanted a steadfast spirit within, that it would always be the same and not wavering between righteousness and sin.

If you have had an unclean heart, ask God to do the same for you.

Questions:

  • What was the name of the woman with whom David committed adultery?
  • What was the name of the woman’s husband?
  • Who was it that David got to put the husband in a place where he would die?
