Rejoice for the coming Judgment

Old Testament: Psa 98.7–9

To read the Bible in a year, read Psalms 96–98 on August 13, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

Psalm 98 is a happy psalm, filled with encouragement to sing to the Lord and to praise him. Then it ends on this note:

Let the sea roar, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell in it;
Let the rivers clap their hands;
Let the hills be joyful together before the LORD,
For He is coming to judge the earth.
With righteousness He shall judge the world,
And the peoples with equity.

– Psalm 98.7–9

Let the oceans and everything in them, let the earth and everyone who lives on it, let all the rivers that flow on the land, and let the hills that cover this planet all clap and rejoice for something wonderful that is coming!

What is coming? The Lord himself shall come to judge the world, but he will do so in righteousness and equity.

Let the followers of Jesus Christ rejoice because, although the world fights him constantly, and tries to silence us, the time will come when he will silence them.

Questions:

  • Do you rejoice or shudder at the prospect of the coming Judgment Day?
  • If you fear it, why?
