New Testament: 1Co 1.17
To read the Bible in a year, read First Corinthians 1 on August 19, In the year of our Lord 2022
By Don Ruhl
When Paul heard that the Christians at Corinth were calling themselves after their favorite preachers, he explained that he baptized few people in Corinth and that he was glad for not having baptized that many. He explained,
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.
– 1 Corinthians 1.17
Others could do the baptizing, but as an apostle, the Lord Jesus had sent Paul throughout the Mediterranean world to preach Christ, which included teaching about baptism. However, baptism without Christ is nothing, but Christ without baptism is still Christ.
Questions:
- Have you overemphasized baptism?
- Do you make it a point to preach Christ or to preach baptism above all things?
