Are wisdom and knowledge always helpful?

Old Testament: Ecc 1.16–18

To read the Bible in a year, read Ecclesiastes 1–3 on September 17, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

We want to be wiser and we want to know more, but is that always helpful? Listen to Solomon as he sought to grow in wisdom and knowledge:

I communed with my heart, saying, “Look, I have attained greatness, and have gained more wisdom than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My heart has understood great wisdom and knowledge.” And I set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is grasping for the wind. For in much wisdom is much grief, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.

– Ecclesiastes 1.16–18

How could that ever be? Take a class on infectious diseases. You will learn many helpful things. Your wisdom and knowledge will grow. You will also grow in fear.

Gain wisdom. Gain knowledge. However, always keep things in perspective. Seek balance. When you learn of infectious diseases, also seek to learn about our wonderful immune system.

Be wise and be knowledgeable but also live as God directs and you will do well in life.
