What happens when people tell a preacher not to declare the Lord?

Old Testament: Isa 30.8–11

To read the Bible in a year, read Isaiah 29–30 on October 4, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

A sad thing happened: The Lord’s people rebelled against him, refusing to hear the Law of the Lord:

Now go, write it before them on a tablet,
And note it on a scroll,
That it may be for time to come,
Forever and ever:
That this is a rebellious people,
Lying children,
Children who will not hear the law of the LORD;
Who say to the seers, “Do not see,”
And to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us right things;
Speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits.
Get out of the way,
Turn aside from the path,
Cause the Holy One of Israel
To cease from before us.”

– Isaiah 30.8–11

How can you know when a people has rebelled against the God of heaven? When they tell the preacher not to tell them what they need to hear but what they want to hear. When they want to hear smooth things and when they want to hear that the Scriptures really do not mean what they appear to say.

You can know a people has departed from their Creator when they tell a preacher not to speak on God, but to speak on other things.

Questions:

  • What do you want the preacher to preach?
  • Do you want to hear everything about God or only about some of his attributes?
