Converted Greeks were like converted Jews

New Testament: 1Th 2.14–15

To read the Bible in a year, read First Thessalonians 2 on October 14, In the year of our Lord 2022

By Don Ruhl

The local Greeks in Thessalonica did not take too kindly to their fellow citizens rejecting idolatry and following Jesus Christ. However, Paul let the Christians in Thessalonica know this:

For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. For you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they did from the Judeans, who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they do not please God and are contrary to all men…

– 1 Thessalonians 2.14–15

Converted Jews suffered from their Jewish brethren and the converted Greeks suffered from their Greek brethren. However, those persecutors had the same mind as the people who crucified Christ, and that should have assured the Thessalonian converts that they were on the right track.

Questions:

  • Have family or friends held it against you that you became a Christian?
  • What have you done about it?
