Peace promised, but a sword instead

Old Testament: Jer 4.10

To read the Bible in a year, read Jeremiah 3–4 on October 20, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

The Lord spoke to Judah of peace that they could have, if they returned to him, but if they did not, they would have war. Therefore, Jeremiah said:

Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD!
Surely You have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem,
Saying, ‘You shall have peace,’
Whereas the sword reaches to the heart.”

– Jeremiah 4.10

The sword was not inevitable but if the nation continued on its current track, the sword from the Babylonians would cut God’s people.

Perhaps Jeremiah wondered why the Lord would speak of peace when war seemed so obvious.

Questions:

  • Do you live in peace with the Lord?
  • If not, what do you need to do to fix it?
