The Man of Sin

New Testament: 2Th 2.4

To read the Bible in a year, read Second Thessalonians 2 on October 19, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

Paul taught that before the Lord Jesus returns, two things must happen. First, there must be a church-wide falling away. Second, the man of sin has to be revealed (2 Thessalonians 2.1–3).

Then Paul elaborated more on the man of sin, saying that he:

…opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

– 2 Thessalonians 2.4

The falling away did happen and the man of sin was, and still is, part of that movement. He seeks glory for himself that should only go to God. The man of sin set himself up in the church, claiming to be the head of the church. People even call him, “father.”

Since these things have happened, the Lord Jesus Christ could return whenever God the Father sends him. Are you ready for that great day?

Questions:

  • Who do you think Paul described?
  • Why has Jesus not returned yet?
