The final sacrifice

New Testament: Heb 9.24–26

To read the Bible in a year, read Hebrews 9 on November 12, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

Why does not Jesus come to earth for every generation and die for that generation? Consider what the Book of Hebrews says:

For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another—He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

– Hebrews 9.24–26

First, Jesus entered into heaven after the sacrifice of himself, something which no animal used as a sacrifice ever did.

Second, his single sacrifice of himself was sufficient. It took care of the problem. Otherwise, he would have to reappear for every new generation.

Questions:

  • With whose blood did the Levitical priests enter the Most Holy Place?
  • With whose blood did Jesus enter into the Most Holy Place in heaven?
