God knew right where their idolatry was

Old Testament: Eze 8.3–4

To read the Bible in a year, read Ezekiel 7–9 on November 14, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

Sometimes Israel thought that God did not see their idolatry and at other times they did not care whether or not he saw it. To Ezekiel’s generation, God wanted them to know that he knew all about it:

He stretched out the form of a hand, and took me by a lock of my hair; and the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven, and brought me in visions of God to Jerusalem, to the door of the north gate of the inner court, where the seat of the image of jealousy was, which provokes to jealousy. And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, like the vision that I saw in the plain.

– Ezekiel 8.3–4

Israel had made an image of jealousy, an idol that provoked God. However, Ezekiel could also see the glory of God in the place, although the prophet said nothing of the glory of the idol, showing that idols cannot compete with the one true and living God.

Questions:

  • Do you remind yourself that God is aware of what you do?
  • Have you ever worshiped an idol?
