Sweet and Bitter

New Testament: Rev 10.8–9

To read the Bible in a year, read Revelation 10 on December 19, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

You have had sweet and sour food, but there is a sweet and sour, or rather sweet and bitter food for the soul. John saw a mighty angel with a little book in his hand. John said that a voice from heaven told him:

“Go, take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the earth.”

– Revelation 10.8

John went to do so, and the angel revealed further what he was to do with the book and how it would affect him:

“Take and eat it; and it will make your stomach bitter, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.”

– Revelation 10.9

That is just like the word of God. When we read and meditate on it, tasting its rich flavors, it is sweet in our mouths, but once we digest it, we experience the fullness of the word of God. It rebukes our sin. It brings persecution when we do what it says.

Therefore, expect a full range of experiences when you take in the word of God.
