Jesus did not give us the impossible to do

New Testament: Matt 5.48

To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 5.27–48 on January 6, In the year of our Lord Christ 2023

It is interesting to hear people’s comments on something that Jesus taught because almost everyone says that what He taught cannot be done. Here is what He taught:

“Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”

– Matthew 5.48

Why would Jesus tell us to do something that we cannot do? It is important when you read the Bible to ignore the chapter and verse numberings as much as possible, because they break up our thought.

In the immediate context Jesus taught that we should not only love those who love us, but also love those who do not love us, just as our heavenly Father also loves those who do not love Him. If we love all people, then our love is “perfect” or a better word would be “complete.” We can do that.

Questions:

  • Do you love all people?
  • If not, what keeps you from doing it?
