He did the right thing, then he did the wrong thing

Old Testament: Gen 19.6–8

To read the Bible in a year, read Genesis 18–19 on January 7, In the year of our Lord Christ 2023

By Don Ruhl

When the two angels entered the town of Sodom, Lot took them into his home, but the men of the city had noticed the angels, who appeared as men and wanted to “know them,” in a carnal way.

Lot rebuked the men of his city, but what he did after that it is hard for us to imagine:

So Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly! See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.”

– Genesis 19.6–8

How he could offer his daughters in this manner baffles us, and not only that but they were already married.

Yet, I also think of God offering his Son to the people, knowing of the horrible things they would do to him. But no one objects to that.

Questions:

  • What do you think of this episode in Lot’s life?
  • What do you think of God giving his Son to people who hated him?
